Rosacea

Rosacea Treatment in the East Bay

Rosacea is a common skin disorder that affects around 14 million Americans, according to the National Rosacea Society. Unfortunately, most sufferers do not recognize the signs of rosacea; often, they mistake it for another skin condition, such as acne. This lack of awareness allows the condition to progress and delays proper treatment. At our practice in Walnut Creek, Dr. Jerome Potozkin helps patients with rosacea understand their condition and offers a variety of rosacea treatment options for individuals in the East Bay.

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic condition that can affect multiple areas of the face, such as the nose, chin, cheeks, and forehead, but also other areas of the body. Often, people with rosacea experience flare ups followed by periods of remission. Although the exact cause of rosacea is still unknown, the disorder typically affects people who are over 30 years of age and is more prevalent in fair-skinned individuals. If left untreated, the condition may worsen. What usually begins as a flushing or redness can develop into irritated red bumps and pimples.

The most common signs of rosacea include:

  • Frequent blushing
  • Persistent redness
  • Bumps and pimples
  • Noticeable blood vessels

Additionally, rosacea may cause:

  • Thickening of the skin
  • Burning, stinging, or itching
  • Raised red patches of skin
  • Irritated eyes

Rosacea Treatment

Although there is no cure for rosacea, the condition can be managed effectively with topical treatments or photo light therapy. Because the symptoms of rosacea tend to vary from patient to patient, treatment must be tailored to each individual. A board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Potozkin can provide personalized rosacea treatment for patients of his East Bay practice. Dr. Potozkin typically employs conventional rosacea treatment methods first; for patients who do not respond to such remedies, he may recommend laser and light therapies.

Conventional Methods

  • Skin Care: A skin care regimen that is designed to soothe the skin is often part of a successful rosacea treatment plan.
  • Topical Treatments: Medications such as MetroGel® and other oral antibiotics may be prescribed to help manage redness, bumps, and pimples.
  • Trigger Avoidance: With Dr. Potozkin's help, triggers that lead to rosacea flare-ups, such as exposure to heat and the consumption of certain foods, may be identified so that patients may avoid them.

Laser and Light Therapies

  • Fraxel® Laser: Rosacea treatment at our East Bay practice with the Fraxel® re:store™ or re:pair™ laser may benefit patients with severe redness and visible blood vessels.
  • IPL: Intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) can help to diminish the appearance of blood vessels and redness.
  • Blue Light: Photodynamic therapy with blue light is a highly effective light treatment that may reduce the inflammation that causes redness.
