Hair

Many of our dermatology patients complain that they are frustrated with unwanted hair. As many of us know, shaving and plucking can be time-consuming and often lead to irritation or other dermatological problems. Waxing hair can be very expensive , and the results do not last longer than several weeks. Often, patients seek a permanent solution to the problem of unwanted hair. That’s why Dr. Potozkin offers laser hair removal to his East Bay patients. Dr. Potozkin and his staff have performed hundreds of successful treatments and have trained physicians and nurses across the world in laser hair removal. Our center is a designated Lumenis training center.

Laser hair removal uses the technology of laser surgery, but it is gentle because the energy level of the laser is low. During laser hair removal, Dr. Potozkin passes the laser over the affected area of the patient’s skin. The color in the hair follicle absorbs the light from the laser, and eventually the heat from this light damages the follicle. After a brief amount of time, the hair that once grew from the damaged follicle will fall out of the treated area. This can take up to two weeks.

Treatment time varies by patient and the area treated; it takes the most time to treat large areas with dense or thick hair. Like any laser surgery or procedure, laser hair removal may require some recovery time. Patients usually experience some mild redness, tenderness, and swelling of the treated area. Dr. Potozkin advises patients to avoid exposing the treated area to the sun following laser hair removal, but patients can return to daily activities immediately after the procedure.
